Ulcer Case Study No. 4

Patient: 14-year-old Warmblood mare with a history of occasionally difficult behaviour under saddle. Since moving to a new barn while on treatment with EOC® oil, the mare has shown improvement in her behaviour.

November 19, 2021: A gastroscopy revealed mild-to-moderate glandular inflammation in the pyloric antrum. No ulceration was noted along the greater curvature, lesser curvature, or within the esophagus. A cluster of bot larvae were present along the margo plicatus.

Diagnosis: mild glandular inflammation.

Medications: 4 oz. Equine Omega Complete® once daily, long-term; Ivermectin + praziquantel (ie., Eqvalan Gold) as per the label directions, one time.

Glandular ulceration typically requires a minimum of 8-12 weeks of treatment for resolution. Therefore, continued administration of the EOC® oil was recommended. Advised to avoid using Bute, Banamine, and Previcox if possible, maximize turnout, and offer alfalfa hay or cubes with Tiki’s grain meals. Regular work of low-medium intensity was recommended during the healing period.
