Patient: 8-year-old Warmblood gelding presenting with complaints of poor attitude under saddle, poor coat with areas of alopecia, and irritability when groomed. History of glandular ulcers.
September 14, 2022: Upon Gastroscope exam, stomach emptying was noted to be adequate. Six small squamous crater ulcers were observed in the squamous mucosa along the margo plicatus at the lesser curvature.
In the glandular mucosa surrounding the pylorus, two folds/swollen areas with a fibrinous film or exudative surface could be seen.
Diagnosis: Grade 2 squamous gastric ulcers and grade 1 mild glandular ulcers.
Treatment: Gelding was prescribed Equine Omega Complete® to take 2 oz twice daily for seven days, followed by 4 oz once daily for 14 days, followed by 2 oz twice daily until the next gastroscopy.
October 13, 2022: The owner has commented that the gelding continues to kick out at leg at the canter, but behaviour has been normal at the walk and trot.
Upon Gastroscope exam, stomach emptying was noted to be adequate. Ulcers that had been previously observed in the squamous mucosa have completely resolved. No new ulcerations present.
In the glandular mucosa just below the margo plicatus in the lesser curvature, two small hyperaemic areas could be seen. The previous fibrinous folds in the glandular mucosa surrounding the pylorus remained; however, a thinner film with less inflammation was evident.
Gelding advised continuing Equine Omega Complete® at 3 oz daily for another 30 days. Recommended repeat gastroscopy in 30 days.
